Most of my first week in Auckland was spent getting settled and running errands – not exciting except for, of course, driving in a new country on the left side of the road. The tricky part was not staying on the right (left) side of the road, but rather remembering which side of the car is the drivers side, and once inside the car, figuring out where the seatbelt is. More embarrassing, but safer for all parties involved.
The week of domesticity continued with Our First BBQ at our house, and first on a kiwi bbq – no grill hood, and something that me/Matt/Ben assembled. Saturday was the firm holiday party (more to follow on that) and then Sunday, we took a little day trip up north, going through Manly (stopping by Manly Beach and downtown Manly) with many Manly stores:
Next stop was Shakespear Regional Park, a park on a peninsula a little further north, which served as an army base during WWII. Of key interest during this trip was the pukeko – while some may call it things like “a stupid Maori chicken”, it really is a glorius (albeit not that bright and mostly flightless) bird:
Other highlights of the park included the many sheep, who serve as not-very-friendly lawnmowers.
